How you find your true self

Do you sometimes feel like you don't know who you really are and what you actually want in life?

We live in a society where many expectations are placed on us. It is clearly defined what is accepted and what is not. What is considered «normal», how we should behave, how we should dress, what we have to do to be successful, … .

Imagine someone in Zurich dancing and singing in the streets. In other countries this would be absolutely normal, but here you would think this person must be on drugs. If somebody tells you that he or she would rather do a carpenter’s apprenticeship after graduating from university than to become a doctor, we think that this person is nuts and is about to throw his or her entire success out the window.

But you know what? Success isn’t defined by a certain career, relationship status or a certain amount of money. You can achieve all those things but still feel very empty.

You’re successful when you do what makes you feel good. If you do what makes you happy and what brings you joy every day.

Live your life the way YOU want to and not the way others expect you to. Just because your family, friends or society thinks that you would be much better off studying and becoming a doctor doesn’t mean that you should.

Sure, if that’s what you would like to do yourself because you really want it, then go for it! But if you do it just to get the approval of others, ask yourself what YOU really want in life.

Why should you spend your days making everyone else happy except yourself? Because if you do that, at the end of the day you will always feel that there is something missing, that there must be something more. You will always be seeking fulfilment through the validation of others.

Let’s just stop this. Instead, live the life you dream of.

Discover who you really are and ask yourself:

Who am I really?

If someone asks us who we are, we tell them our name, age, education, job, where we live etc. But this is not who you really are. These are just various experiences and achievements that you have made in the course of your life. These are labels that you have picked up over the years and through which you let your identity be determined.

Ask yourself who you really are without all these labels. What brings you joy? What sets your heart on fire? When do you feel completely yourself?

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

That is such a powerful question! What would I do if I knew that it would work a hundred percent?

This is where our dreams and desires show themselves. Because often we don’t do things just because we’re afraid of what will happen if it doesn’t work out. What others will say about us. But if we had the certainty that it would work out, we would do it immediately. And you know what? If you go after your dreams with that level of trust, then it will work out.

What would I do if no one was watching?

How often do we do things just because it’s expected of us?! We act differently in public than we do at home alone. We change so as not to attract attention. At school and at work we create a new personality in order to fit in with this environment. We even change our behavior when we are with certain friends.

We do not want to be the person who is different. But what would you do if no one is watching you? What would you do, say, dress, if you were authentically yourself? Don’t let others influence you anymore. Be confident in yourself and live the way you really are.

Take some time for yourself to reflect and ask yourself who you really are, what brings you joy, and what do you want to create in your life?

Have the courage to be yourself and create a life that truly fulfills you.

When you are happy and fulfilled, this also has a positive influence on the whole world around you.
